I don't know whether the sodium level is higher or not. But I've lived in a house with a water softener, and the water definitely tasted salty. In fact, where I lived (Chicago), you had a cold water unfiltered tap at your kitchen sink so you could get drinking/cooking water that had not been through the softener.

Sounds like the softener wasn’t set right. It has to be set for the hardness of the water and so little salt is added that you should never be able to taste it.
