So one of my male Guinea Pigs has some sores on his side, they look like he has been scratching a lot. His skin is dry and flaky. The only thing I have changed recently is I had to buy some sawdust instead of the normal aubiose I use and I probably haven't cleaned them as often as I should (I usually clean every 2 days, been more like every 4 recently). Getting some aubiose today and booking him in to vets, I have used the tape method to see if I can spot any mites under microscope but I cannot, but just wondering if I can give him anything to help soothe his skin. His roomie Turbo is absolutely fine. I have used this natural salve on Foster dogs before and it has helped immensely with hot spots, so wondering if it was safe for pigs?

Sweet Almond Oil, Coconut Oil and a selection of 5 herbs known for their skin friendly properties. Calendula is anti inflammatory, moisturising and healing. Plantain is anti inflammatory, soothing and said to promote healing. Comfrey is said to promote healing and is also known as 'knitbone' for this reason. Yarrow has so many uses but is most famous as a wound healer and finally Rosemary. Rosemary is said to offer anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, ant-bacterial, and antiseptic properties.

Another salve:
Made with hemp, lavender and peppermint oils. Hemp oil contains Omega 3 and 6 and is a great source of high quality nutrients for skin health.

It sounds like it could be mites, or possibly something fungal. You might read:

A skin scraping test for mites is not reliable. Can you post some photos of the sores? If it's mites, you'll need to treat with Ivermectin; herbal products won't help.
