Overweight Piggy
Oh, that sounds sensible! I'll give that a try today, as I've always cut their veg into large pieces which Ross seems to eat all by himself. Thanks!
Ah sorry Lynx! I wasn't sure how to reply without quoting, for context, but I know now. Sorry!!
They have Burgess Excel nuggets with mint, which is what we were told to feed them by the RSPCA. I've tried new pellets (as I couldn't get those for a while) but they didn't eat any (I mixed them with the remaining normal ones so as to introduce them gradually, but even when that was all they got for pellets, they didn't eat them).
Wow! That explains things - I haven't been giving it to them unlimited, but they probably got a bit too much, and knowing Ross, he probably eats it all! I've given them less today as I was advised to earlier, and also cut back on veg, so hopefully Ross won't gain anymore and might lose a bit of excess fat. Thank you for that insight!
That's another thing I learned from this forum. Read the ingredients! I fed my Guinea Pigs what amounts to poison in the form of too much sugar. Wyld Harvest brand of pellets have lots of other things in it that are not good for Guinea Pigs. The kibble is more or less pure sugar and there is dried corn and seeds in it. It has all the right buzz words like "fortified" and "healthy" in big letters on the front of the package. It's the fine print on the back that gets you. A little reading of the ingredients and some research would have saved me and my piggies some pain.
Gosh! That's really good to know. I think I'll stick with these pellets for now but in smaller quantities, as they've been recommended by the RSPCA and my vet - but reading the ingredients on any and all guinea pig food has just become one of my top priorities! Thanks for the tip.
You might be surprised or maybe even shocked by what you find if you were to read the ingredients on what you eat too. 😁 Scruffy's illness opened my eyes to to a lot of things I didn't know about these little creatures.
I had no idea this could be as simple as not reading the ingredients on their pellets - would you recommend any other brands you've found to be reliable? I'm planning to stick with these for a while, but if smaller quantitiesdon't work, I'll look at switching to a different sort.
Thanks Lynx! Apparently I need to start actually reading the info on this site before asking questions.
