Hi Mythic,

Thank you so much for the offer. I actually just texted Ed and am waiting to hear back from him--the delay in picking up wasn't because of not having the materials for building the CC cage (although I ended up not having enough grids, a day or so of searching led to learning the Bed Bath Beyond in Framingham has the correct grids in stock so I reserved two boxes and picked it up the following day) but rather, because I ended up ordering fleece lining instead of making them by hand as I originally intended due to learning I didn't have an actual sewing machine on hand. I was told the liner would arrive this coming Tuesday which was why I asked if we could do the pick up on Wednesday--but lo and behold, as I was leaving the house to run some errands today, I opened my front door and saw the package! Though it was raining, everything was well packaged and the fleece was bagged in another plastic bag and nice and dry. Which was more than I could say for my Amazon delivery that also came today even though that delivery was in my mailbox. Go figure. Since the fleece was the reason for the hold up, I just texted Ed before seeing your offer to pick up the piggies and asked if we could do pick up on Monday.

I'm not worried about the dust from construction--the health concerns was more with the noise level and disruptions to resting. The basement is downstairs and the construction is taking place in the basement, the back porch and the main house--my room, where the piggies will be, is away from it (the biggest issue with construction I had was losing my garden on the back porch and the noise while they were in the basement--well, that and the shaking/vibrations. I'm told they're almost completely done with the basement though we shall see. Either way, they are done with all the shaking/vibrations making) My concern with the construction was really just the noise as, so long as I pick up the piggies in the evening, they wouldn't be exposed to any flying dust from the car to my room.

Thank you so much for the offer, both of holding onto the piggies and the supplies/help. I am good with supplies...well, mostly--the KMS was delayed, apparently by a truck getting in late according to the delivery service's site (it was supposed to arrive yesterday) but I expect it will arrive Monday. If not, I already ran out and bought a small bag of Oxbow pellets and have some Oxbow and Sweet Meadow Hay here already so even if it doesn't come by Monday, I have food for the piggies and will just end up giving them a mix of Oxbow and KMS pellets until the Oxbow runs out. If it turns out they prefer Oxbow over KMS, then I'll probably just donate the KMS to a rescue. I'm glad you've had luck with cold switches--I prefer to do them since the animals I take in have usually been on a bad diet (my chinchilla, Bruce, was the exception but that was because he was originally meant to be a breeder and show chin and the breeder actually cared about her little brood) but didn't want to do so if it might negatively affect the guineas. I'll make a cold switch since I don't want to give them the option of ignoring the healthier food for junk. I'll keep their old food on hand just in case the cold switch ends up negatively affecting their GI tract though. I know they get either fresh apples, baby carrots, or romaine lettuce as well (not all at the same time) on alternate days so I'm not concerned about having to introduce them to fresh veggies though I'll probably ask about how much they usually get a day. Again, thank you so much!

Ed got back to me--the piggies went to their new home about a half hour after I texted him.

Greysome,
I am glad you were able to work things out! So sorry that you didnt get these piggies :( you seemed like a great home for them. If you still want a pair there are plenty of great pig rescues in the area and you can always keep your eyes open on craigslist (although you have to be careful with that). Im more than happy still to provide any service or advice I can. You seem like you've really done your homework. Again, sorry someone else took them but at least they got a new home. Feel free to DM me anytime!

Skip the apples (when you finally do have guinea pigs).

Mythic and Greysome, you sound local (I am in Marlborough). Would be great to meet you sometime, and am so glad these pigs are getting a home. Incidentally, I have been emailing folks lately who are offering their pigs for free as I have noticed the ads. I think alot here have done this, and I have referred to Talishan's post at the top of this topic in my emails as FYI.

PS, as mmeadow mentioned, Drs Pelletier and Corcoran are good. Also, Drs Kilgore, Doidge (Littleton), Dr Graham (Tufts), Dr Ogden (Southborough).

Mythic-- I'm keeping an eye out and am considering making a trip (or several) to the ARL in Boston. I'm glad the piggies got a new home so while a bit sad they aren't here, I really can't complain or whine. Thank you for the offer(s) and help! I appreciate it and will keep you in mind if I have future questions.

Lynx-- I'm not planning on feeding any cavies I may have fruit (well, except that great pretender, the tomato)

daveandtiff-- thank you--I will be going through the names you gave me as well.

There's an exceptionally adorable trio (Baby, Puff, and Panda) at the MSPCA Nevins Farm shelter in Methuen. I don't know whether you can view this Facebook video:

I've been looking at all the cavies in shelters in MA in surround states. I fell in love with a few but I just took one in this morning (or, yesterday morning, rather, considering the time) and will wait until the current cavy is sexed (I figure it'll be less stressful if it gets done when it gets its nails clipped as well) and I have a better understanding of its personality (and name! Currently, I'm just calling it sweetie like I do my nephews and nieces) before looking more deeply into getting another cavy as its companion.

I may also wait until one of the hamsters I adopted, Skipidoo--aka Skippy-- passes (a dwarf hybrid, age unknown but somewhere between 18 months and just after 2) as the cage he is currently in is about the length of the 2x4 C&C cage and due to his condition when I first brought him home and since he can't have playtime (too nervous/stressed whenever he's out of his cage unless I'm holding him), I refuse to downgrade him to a smaller cage. So until he passes and I get rid of his current cage, I only have room for a single 2x4/2x4.5 cage with the possibility of a 2x3 or 2x3.5 stacked on top. I intended on taking in an already bonded pair but since that didn't happen, I'm trying to plan for what happens if current cavy doesn't get along with (future) companion--and then the companions they may both need then.

Still, I may have to drop by Nevins Farms and meet those cute cavies, especially since I want to ask if they allow piggy play dates--and why ask over the phone when you can go in person and play with the adorable fuzzies?

Nevins Farm is well worth the visit to say hello to all the piggies! Say hello to Hagrid for me if he's still there! (He's an ADORABLE skinny fella.)

We bought our first guinea pig 2 days ago from Petco, we had looked at her the day before and they had a pair that we were going to buy, but when we returned only one was there!

My question is where is the best place to look for another female? I live in Marlborough MA (also spend a lot of time around Worcester and Needham where our families are from).

Also, we have our one in a petco starter cage which I quickly learned from researching isn't enough! I'm going to order a C&C cage in the next day or so, but it looks like they don't have tops to them? is there any way they could escape the cage?

If you got yours from petco, then she's probably a baby and will need some baby proofing of the CC cage. There are a couple of different ways which you can find on the guinepigcages site.

For another cavy, I would check petfinder.com or similar sites, shelters and CL (or other similar sites) If you don't mind a drive, late last month/early this month, the ARL in Dedham had a huge influx of guinea pigs that arrived and a good chunk were female. I know some have been put up for adoption. I adopted Miss Daisy from them and during that time, they told me they didn't get a lot of people who came looking for guinea pigs (I had been looking into/doing a lot of research on getting/neutering another cavy--a male--for a good two or three weeks I think before he was adopted).

There are A LOT of people I've noticed posting their cavies up on CL lately. You don't necessarily need to get a piggy the same age as your girl (none of mine are the same age) but remember to go through introductions slowly after quarantine and you want to have a second cage in case they don't get along.
