Spencer's Abscess

I wonder if anything like a wound vac has ever been used on a small animal like a guinea pig (they have been used on dogs). Wound vacs generally aid in healing large areas that are missing skin - but part of the function is squirting in a solution and vacuuming it back out which perhaps might aid in keeping it clean. They do, however, require frequent changes (say, 3X a week) and someone who knows how to do them properly for the change.

Actually, as far as I know, the only reason abscesses keep forming is that they have been incompletely drained. When that happens, they WILL come back because the infection is still there. It's why flushing them multiple times a day to get all that thick pus out is so important.
I'd be very unhappy with a vet that had to do three procedures to get rid of an abscess.

I am very unhappy that this is the third go. I'm really mad that I kept being told everything was OK and it wasn't. π‘. I know medicine isn't an exact science but at least start taking owners concerns. I took their word when they said the draining was normal because of the healing. Now I know better.
Just hope this is the final surgery
I'm also asking for a different AB. Clearly Orbax hasnt done it's job.

They're suggesting it may be a seroma as the drainage has been clear with no smell.
Fingers crossed on Wednesday!
Spencers well. It doesn't bother him. I've been upping his Vit C to prepare his immune system for the surgery. He's already a big boy..but has gained weight as well

Unfortunately Spencer will not be having surgery. Because my concerns kept being blown over...the infection is now so deep in his bone nothing can be done. He will be on antibiotics and pain meds until time for him to leave us πππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππππ
Did you decided that or the vet did for you?
After all its your pig.. There is AB for bone infections I ve read it on this forum..and you can always risk and try. I bet people here Will know how to help you.
Ringo Will be 15 in december and so what, which is more than is avarage age for border collie..i dont take thoose kind of answers, but his vets are very aware of that and they told me as long as he can walk on his own and he aint ill.. he can live.. as long as he is having Will power and assistence.. and meds helps him there is no problem.
Wish Spencer the best..:)

It was just an abscess. First xrays showed no boney involvemenr. They ignored my concerns that was still draining so the infection latched into the bone. He's about to lose a bottom incisor from it. The infection is now on both sides of his jaw and I looked at the xrays (I know how to read them) its pretty bad. Can't believe it got like that this fast. He's been on orbax for 4 months now. It hasn't done his job.
They could try another surgery and scrape the bone but the prognosis of being successful is 5% He'll be on Orbax and Metacam until he either loses 200g or can no longer eat. Then they suggested to have to put him to sleep. They're shocked that he presents as being perfectly healthy and gaining weight. He's running, playing, popcorning and eating.

I'm going to spend today and tomorrow with him. I left a message for his regular vet. Then I'll decide what to do. It's so hard bc he seems healthy..but the xray showed the jaw bone is deteriorating from the infection. I don't want him to suffer but I'm not ready to say goodbye π
