Abscesses

"An abscess is a collection of pus in any part of the body that, in most cases, causes swelling and inflammation around it." Medline Plus

Because guinea pig pus is cheesy and thick in texture, cleaning and flushing daily with a warm, sterile saline solution is frequently recommended for skin abscesses. A drain may be inserted to help keep the area open so it can heal from the inside out. Some abscesses are removed in their entirety to prevent recurrence.

Boars that have been neutered may develop abscesses in the surgical area, sometimes many months afterward. Post neuter care tips to help prevent the occurrence of abscesses on this page.
