I haven't been around much in a while, but I just HAD to pop in and tell y'all that for the first time in 14 years of owning pigs, I had one start chirping!

I've currently got four pigs - Piotr (6yrs) and Jubilee (2 1/2 years, Abby) are in a large cage split down the middle. Neither of them are good at not using their teeth when interacting with other pigs, but Jubliee also pines if he doesn't have a buddy, so the split cage is the best solution at present. Kurt (2 1/2) and Chub Chub (2/ 1/2) live harmoniously in another cage (they are both just the sweetest).

My partner and I were on the couch in the living room, which has line of sight to the divided cage. All of a sudden I hear a loud, clear chirping. I thought a bird much have come into my office (next to the cage) and gotten stuck in the room or something. But there were no wild animals and when he resumed, we were just able to confirm that it was Jubilee making the sound. He did it again for another couple minutes shortly after.

No idea WHY he decided to chirp all of a sudden after 2 1/2 years. It'll be interesting to see if it becomes a regular occurrence, or if it was a one off.

Chirping is indeed magical! I don't know what makes them chirp but it is mysterious and fun for us to speculate!

Congrats! It's been ages since I've had a chirper.

Chirping reminds me of what chipmunks do. Sometimes it’s stress-related and sometimes it seems like they just want to find out if there’s anyone else out there.

That fits for this pig. He's easily alarmed and also likes friends (even if he doesn't know how to keep friends). He gave my partner a good snuggle afterwards.

I have a family of thieving chipmunks around the house. But never heard them chirp! Have heard the squirrels in a sad moment cry though.

I was trying to find a pic of one of my chickens eating from a pan and a chipmunk sitting on the edge of that same pan but couldn't find it. Maybe later!

I've had two chirping pigs, and neither of them ever did it at any time of observable stress. Both would do it when there was no activity in the room, and would "sing" for quite a while as long as nothing distracted them.

All rodents have the ability to chirp, but not all do.

bpatters, yeah, Jubilee stopped whenever we got close enough to the door that he could see us. He'd only chirp away if he thought no humans were observing him.
