Millie has been doing so well, and now overnight she’s not interested in her hay. She only had a few poops, and all day today she just picked at her hay. She’s been pulling at her bedding, chewing at her apple sticks, and chewing on a cardboard roll filled with hay. She’s not a chewer, so something isn’t right.
Her tummy feels full but not bloated. I gave her a couple of massages, and started metaclopramide this morning. Tonight I’m going to get her some floor time so she moves around more.
She’s had some lettuce and fresh grass, but I don’t know how much I should give her. If this is gas, I don’t want to over do the fresh food. She and Ruby Sue have been getting some fresh grass, and I thought maybe that caused digestion issues. She’s peeing so that’s a good sign.
Any thoughts on whether I should try some Critical Care? I don’t want to push too much food if there’s a blockage, but she needs to eat.

Millie only had a couple of poops overnight, and she’s chewing on her bedding. The vet said increase the metoclopramide to 3 times a day. She recommended romaine lettuce when I asked about fresh grass or baby lettuce. She also said I should give Critical Care. Millie got 3 cc last night and some Benebac.

Her last Baytril was a week ago and she didn’t have any issues with it at the time. So I guess I keep doing what I’m doing.

Oops, sorry about that. The vet tech called when I was posting and I must have hit submit. I really didn’t get any advice from the vet that I didn’t already know. I may try a vet close by and see what they say. The chewing concerns me - she’s obviously uncomfortable and she doesn’t want Critical Care but will eat the fresh food.

Almost no poops today, and she’s getting picky about her fresh grass. I was at the local vet clinic picking up food and meds for the dog. I mentioned Millie to the person at the front desk. The vet who sees exotics is there this weekend, so we have at appointment tomorrow at noon! Yay!
In the meantime, Millie is getting romaine and grass, and floor time to move around, and tummy massages. She had a few poops tonight. She’s been warned if she doesn’t shape up, she’ll have a visit from Ruby Sue. That should scare her digestive tract into action.

Vet visit today. The vet doesn’t think there’s anything backed up in her digestive tract. It feels soft and empty. But her bladder felt hard and she urinated when pressed. So the vet is leaning toward something bladder related and thinks the lack of appetite, and chewing her bedding and hideys is pain related.
She said stones, bloat, and UTIs are more common in guinea pigs that get a lot of fresh vegetables and large amounts of pellets. I don’t feed a lot of either of those. Millie isn’t that wild about pellets. But I’ve been pushing fresh grass and veggies the last couple of days just to keep her digestion going. So I have to try more Critical Care, which Millie hates.
I’m to quit the metoclopramide, continue the Benebac, supplement with Critical Care, and she sent me home with Metacam for pain and Albon, which is their go-to antibiotic that doesn’t upset the digestive tract.
I cut some Mulberry sticks and she chewed on those, but she’s not interested in the fresh grass. It’s a puzzler.

No, she didn’t do an X-ray today. We don’t have any from previous visits either because Millie never had any real health issues before this. The vet will be in tomorrow and again on Wednesday, so I’ll have to follow up and ask about X-rays.
This clinic is the only one nearby that sees exotics. The other local clinic we used to go to lost both their exotic vets, so I don’t know anything about their new vet except she just graduated from university last year.
The clinic we went to in June for her wellness exam didn’t have any openings until next week. That’s where we got the Baytril. They’re about an hour from here. Funny thing is, the vet we see there used to work at the clinic with the vet we saw today. She moved to a metropolitan area and a larger practice.
So tonight we’ll do some floor time again and see if we can get some digestion moving.

What I did with Jessie and her Critical care is 1. made it runnier than recipe. 2. I blended her favourite veggies and added to mix. 3. I put in microwave to warm it, stir it and serve it. She loved it! A bit of blended rockmelon and red capsicum juice and she went gaga over it!
For stones when Jinx had one I syringed her extra water. When the day came for stone removal it hocus pocus disappeared. The idea came to me when vet said they might do key hole surgery to try and flush the stone out. Just an idea. Hope all goes well!
